COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Good Neighbor Award
Each year the city of Winston-Salem holds the city-wide
Neighborhood Conference.
The purpose of the conference is to learn more about services and
resources provided by the city, to participate in workshops and to
hear key note speakers. The conference is open to any Winston-
Salem neighborhood association that has facilitated neighborhood
improvements and brought neighbors together to complete projects
or to address critical neighborhood needs.
The Stonewall Community Association has earned the Good
Neighborhood Award for several years.
Community Food Drive
The Stonewall Community held its first food drive for the Second
Harvest Food Bank in December 2009. The Stonewall Community
continues to have a yearly food drive.
Adopt A Street
Saturday, March 21, 2009, our youth along with other
neighborhood volunteers became involved in the Adopt A Street
Program and were out on Bethabara Road picking up roadside
litter. What began as an idea of our youth, Asia Davis and Alyssa
Peay became a reality when the idea was brought to the Youth
Committee. Adopt A Street brought out youth and adults for work
and fellowship. The attire was simple- gloves, orange safety vests
and comfortable attire.
To become involved in this program, participants must sign a
waiver of liability from the City of Winston-Salem and the
Association. Each participant must also complete a safety review
which includes viewing a short video on safety. Volunteers must be
at least age 8 and with parent/guardian supervision. The Youth
Committee adopted a street – watch for the sign.
Annual Potluck
The Hospitality Committee hosts the Annual Potluck at the end of
the monthly association meeting held on the third (3 rd ) Sunday in
December. All neighbors are encouraged to come out and bring
your favorite dish.
Neighborhood Watch Program
Neighborhood Watch is a citizens organization devoted to
preventing crime and vandalism within a neighborhood. It is
through coordination and cooperation with the Winston-Salem
Police Department that members learn non-intervention ways to
deter crime. Neighborhood Watch members are to stay alert to
unusual activity and contact the authorities.
National Night Out is an event that is recognized by many
communities where neighbors are encouraged to turn their porch
lights on and come out to participate in a fun filled evening of games, activities, food and information on safety.
Volunteer Hours
After the election of President Barack Obama, one of the first
challenges he issued to the nation was for us to all volunteer our time and energy to a greater cause. City Council member, Vivian Burke and the Neighborhood Services Department asked the Stonewall Community Association to participate and document our hours. The Association accepted the challenge. We were excited to
know that our volunteer hours were the highest among neighborhood associations and exceeded many groups within the
Parks and Recreation Departments and Non-Profit Organizations.
It is through the unselfishness of volunteers that The Stonewall
Association is what it is today.
Community Garden
The Stonewall Community Garden is located at the dead-end of Chancellorsville Drive. Garden plots are available on a first come first served basis from April through December for a fee.
Annual Neighborhood Inspections
The Stonewall Community Association participates each year in an annual inspection of the neighborhood. The purpose of the inspection is to inform residents of code violations to their property. Any resident found in violation is
notified and given an opportunity to address the violation.
